The Q3 Email Threat Trends Report has revealed a significant escalation in email-based threats directed at Microsoft Outlook and Google Gmail, with attacker strategies concentrating over 90% of phishing attempts on these platforms. This alarming trend comes as researchers analyzed 1.8 billion emails, unveiling a staggering 26 million more malicious messages when compared to the previous year, indicating a 13 percent annual increase in threats.

Intriguingly, attackers are relying on simple yet effective tactics rather than sophisticated malware, utilizing everyday methods to bypass traditional email security defenses. The report indicates that malicious emails are nearly evenly split between content-based and link-based threats, with both categories making up about 48-52 percent of detected attacks. Furthermore, over 67,000 new malicious links and 148,000 unknown malicious attachments were found, underscoring the evolving nature of these threats and the effectiveness of advanced filtering techniques.
