The UK government has announced an ambitious plan to phase out animal testing by 2030, with a focus on skin irritants and Botox testing on animals. Countries like the US and those in the EU are similarly exploring alternatives to animal testing. Despite these efforts, animal testing still persists due to regulatory requirements, as millions of animals are used annually in research for drug efficacy.

Research advancements, particularly in biotechnology, are paving the way for alternatives such as ‘organs on chips’ which allow for simulating human organ functions without using live animals. These innovations not only improve understanding of human biology but also facilitate drug testing. While AI plays a role in analyzing complex biological data and drug development, a complete phasing out of animal testing by 2030 seems unlikely given current regulatory landscapes. Nevertheless, the rapid advancement in these technologies sparks hope for a future where animal testing may no longer be necessary.
