The AI revolution fueling the bot epidemic

The emergence of AI tools has drastically lowered the barriers for cybercriminals, allowing them to develop bots that are increasingly advanced and capable of evading detection. The 2025 Imperva Bad Bot Report revealed that as of 2024, automated traffic constituted 51% of all internet traffic, marking a critical shift driven by AI and large language models. Consequently, businesses face growing challenges as bots are not only abundant but also highly sophisticated, leveraging tactics that mimic human behavior to bypass traditional security measures.

The report highlights alarming trends, including a 40% year-over-year increase in account takeover attacks. These attacks are largely automated, thanks to AI and machine learning, making them faster and harder to detect. Industry-specific threats are evident, particularly in sectors like financial services and telecoms, which have become primary targets. Additionally, as APIs grow in importance, they have also become a focal point for bot attacks, with 44% of advanced bot traffic being directed toward these endpoints.
