Clinical trials are critical for medical research, but recruiting eligible participants remains a major hurdle. Traditional recruitment methods are often limited by geographical constraints and the complexity of eligibility criteria. This study introduces a novel approach leveraging social media data, suggesting that LLMs could streamline the identification of potential trial participants based on their posts and engagement.
The TRIALQA dataset, consisting of data from relevant subreddits, is utilized to train and test various LLMs on their ability to assess eligibility. While initial results indicate the promise of LLMs in this context, challenges persist related to multi-hop reasoning and accurately interpreting eligibility criteria. This poses implications for future applications in clinical trial recruitment, as reliance on social media may raise ethical concerns and data privacy issues that must be addressed to ensure participant trust and compliance.
