Aleksei Olegovich Volkov, also known as “chubaka.kor,” has pleaded guilty to multiple charges linked to ransomware attacks he participated in between July 2021 and November 2022. Acting as an initial access broker for the Yanluowang ransomware group, Volkov identified potential targets, exploited their system vulnerabilities, and sold access to co-conspirators for a share of the ransom payments. Prosecutors state that his actions led to attacks on seven U.S. businesses, with ransom demands totaling around $24 million.
Victims of these attacks, which included an engineering firm and a bank, faced significant operational disruptions due to stolen and encrypted data. Alongside these incidents, harassing phone calls and distributed denial of service attacks were reported as tactics used by the gang. Volkov’s case also involves cryptocurrency transactions traced back to him, verifying his links to ransomware operations. He was arrested in Rome on January 18, 2024, and has since been extradited to Indiana where he remains in custody awaiting sentencing.
