On September 2, 2025, Prosper detected unauthorized activity on its systems, which led to the theft of personal information from customers and loan applicants. After the incident, Prosper published an FAQ to inform the public about the breach. Reportedly, 17.6 million unique email addresses were affected, with stolen data including names, Social Security numbers, IP addresses, and more. Although no funds were accessed, the data stolen can facilitate identity theft and targeted phishing attacks. Prosper has pledged to provide free credit monitoring services following a comprehensive investigation to determine the extent of the affected data.

The company advised users on protecting themselves after the breach by following several steps. These include consulting the vendor’s advice, changing passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and being wary of fake communications from attackers posing as the vendor. Vigilance is essential, as phishing attempts often employ urgency to deceive victims. Users are also encouraged to consider not storing credit card details on websites, along with setting up identity monitoring to detect potential misuse of personal information.
