Matthew Lane, a 20-year-old from Massachusetts, was sentenced to four years in prison for a significant cyberattack on PowerSchool, impacting tens of millions of students and teachers. The attack, recognized as the largest breach of schoolchildren’s data in the U.S., involved the theft of data from nearly 70 million individuals and extortion attempts that included a ransom demand of nearly $2.9 million.

Federal prosecutors had requested an eight-year sentence due to Lane’s ongoing risk to the community and prior criminal behavior. According to court documents, Lane threatened to release sensitive data in December 2024 if his ransom demand wasn’t met, potentially putting countless identities at risk for future exploitation. Though he forfeited $161,000, much of the financial damage remains unaddressed, highlighting the limited impact of his restitution on the overall losses sustained by PowerSchool and its stakeholders.
