The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has announced plans to collaborate with the National Science Foundation (NSF) on a mass deferment for participants in the CyberCorps: Scholarship-For-Service (SFS) program once the government shutdown concludes. This initiative responds to fears among scholarship recipients about repaying significant amounts, including sums upwards of $100,000, if they are unable to secure government positions due to hiring freezes and budget constraints.

The CyberCorps program requires participants to obtain internships and secure federal employment within 18 months post-graduation. OPM spokesperson McLaurine Pinover highlighted that the deferment will provide graduates additional time to find qualifying positions. Furthermore, OPM Director Scott Kupor emphasized the importance of infusing top cybersecurity and AI talent into the federal workforce as crucial for national security. Communication with current participants remains a priority, ensuring they receive guidance on fulfilling their service obligations and available opportunities.
