Victims receive text messages that assert their iPhones have been found abroad, often containing legitimate-looking details about the device, enhancing the message’s credibility. The message directs users to a phishing site mimicking Apple’s official login page, where they unwittingly provide their Apple ID and password, granting scammers illicit access.
The primary aim of this attack is to bypass Apple’s Activation Lock, a feature intended to render stolen devices useless and linked to their rightful owners. This security mechanism provides substantial protection against resale, making social engineering via phishing necessary for scammers. The strategy hinges on discovering the phone number associated with locked devices, potentially sourced from the stolen SIM card or from enrolled contact information displayed on the lock screen, which could readily be manipulated when in the hands of criminals.
