Microsoft has issued an advisory regarding a glitch that may cause some Windows devices to enter the BitLocker recovery screen after installing security updates post-October 14, 2025. This issue affects select client versions of Windows, primarily on Intel-based systems supporting Connected Standby, which allows devices to remain networked during low-energy states. While it does not compromise data security, it requires users to input the BitLocker recovery key upon restarting, which can disrupt workflows. The problem is related to interactions between recent updates and BitLocker’s encryption mechanisms, though Microsoft has yet to disclose the exact cause.
The advisory specifies that no server editions are impacted, thus limiting the issue to consumer and enterprise client environments. Key affected platforms include Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2, as well as Windows 10 version 22H2, with specific knowledge base articles provided for user reference. To mitigate this issue, Microsoft recommends applying a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) for organizations, while individuals are advised to keep their BitLocker recovery keys accessible. Microsoft urges caution before applying these updates, suggesting a pause on non-urgent systems to avoid potential disruptions.
