The Spire Accelerator, developed by IBM’s Research AI Hardware Center and infrastructure capabilities, aims to enhance the performance of AI applications. It boasts 32 individual acceleration cores and a 5nm process technology, enabling up to 48 clusters on IBM Z and LinuxOne systems.
Barry Baker, COO of IBM’s Infrastructure Business, highlighted that Spire empowers multi-model AI, allowing clients to scale AI operations securely and efficiently. Mukesh Kare, Vice President of IBM Semiconductors and Hybrid Cloud, added that the chip development began in 2019, responding to rising AI computational demands and offering key capabilities in transaction processing and fraud detection.
