San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa, has officially started operations of IBM’s Quantum System Two, equipped with the advanced 156-qubit Heron chip. Installed in a new Ikerbasque Foundation building, this system allows over 20 research institutes and 30 companies access, aiming to enhance quantum computing and scientific research through the Basque Quantum program, which allocates €153 million for creating a quantum ecosystem. The strategy involves collaboration between scientific and industrial sectors, aiming to attract talent while boosting the local economy. IBM’s executives believe the integration of quantum computing, traditional computing, and AI will unlock solutions to previously unsolvable problems and elevate Spain’s computational capabilities in various industries. Future developments include a roadmap toward achieving quantum advantage by 2026, alongside plans for a scalable quantum computer with error-correction by 2029.
