Unknown threat actors are abusing Milesight industrial cellular routers to facilitate a smishing campaign that has been targeting users in several European countries, including Sweden and Italy, since February 2022. According to French cybersecurity company SEKOIA, the attackers are taking advantage of the routers’ API to send out malicious SMS messages that contain phishing URLs aimed at capturing sensitive personal information.
The risks associated with this attack are significant, as users receiving these SMS messages may be lured into providing sensitive data or downloading malware unknowingly. The implications of this campaign extend beyond individual users, as the exploitation of industrial routers highlights potential vulnerabilities in network security protocols. Organizations that utilize these routers may need to re-evaluate their security measures to protect against such sophisticated threats.
