Nation-state actors and opportunistic criminals are increasingly targeting Americans, which poses a significant threat to national security. Cybersecurity must be addressed as a collective mission, involving both the government and private sectors to defend essential services, from airports to financial systems. Recent cyber intrusions by groups like Salt Typhoon underline the urgency of strengthening cybersecurity policies and proactive measures.
As chair of the House Committee on Homeland Security, I emphasize the importance of collaboration with state entities and the private sector to enhance cyber resilience. The Cybersecurity and Information Sharing Act of 2015 has been pivotal in fostering this partnership, allowing for vital threat intelligence sharing while protecting civil liberties. However, current challenges, including rising compliance burdens and a skilled workforce shortage, necessitate swift action.
Moreover, integrating artificial intelligence in cybersecurity strategies shows promise, providing advanced threat detection and response capabilities. Yet, we must also be wary of adversaries leveraging AI for offensive operations. It is crucial to strike a balance between fostering innovation and ensuring national security. Strengthening America’s cyber defense is essential as we face increasing threats to our sovereignty and society.
