The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, names 25 unnamed individuals believed to be operating the phishing-as-a-service known as Lighthouse, alleging that these scammers have caused significant financial harm to countless victims. Google accuses the defendants of using deceptive text messages that mislead individuals into providing sensitive information, exploiting the trust associated with Google and other brands. The scale of this operation is alarming, with studies showing over 1 million victims across 121 countries from 200,000 Lighthouse-created websites in just 20 days.

In response to the operation, Google seeks a temporary restraining order and compensation while urging for hosting providers to block Lighthouse-related services. Alongside legal measures, Google has expressed its support for legislation aimed at combating scams, including the GUARD Act, which focuses on protecting retirees from fraud, as well as measures to combat foreign robocalls. According to Google, this lawsuit is part of a broader effort to enhance user awareness about phishing risks and prevent ongoing scams that exploit digital platforms.
