CIOs Must Regain Visibility in the Age of AI

CIOs face the challenge of maintaining visibility and influence as businesses increasingly rely on advancements in generative AI and digital transformation. Reports indicate that a significant portion of CIOs in EMEA do not have direct reporting lines to CEOs, detracting from their political influence in decision-making processes. This indicates a paradox of success where the better IT functions, the less visible CIOs become, potentially leading to missed opportunities for innovation.

Furthermore, the emergence of new roles such as Chief Digital Officers (CDOs) and Chief AI Officers (CAIOs) can dilute the authority of CIOs, placing them in a secondary position as other executives take the lead on strategic innovations. A culture that fails to recognize the contributions of IT can also undermine CIOs, as business successes are no longer directly associated with IT initiatives, thereby reinforcing the perception of their diminishing role. If CIOs do not adapt and position themselves effectively, they risk becoming mere support staff rather than strategic leaders in the innovation landscape.

To combat this trend, CIOs must redefine their visibility by aligning with business KPIs, forging alliances with other departments, and leading the organizational narrative around technology. By proactively engaging in early stages of project planning and emphasizing the strategic importance of IT, CIOs can reclaim their role as influential leaders. This visibility is crucial in ensuring that CIOs remain central to discussions about the future of digital innovation and business strategy.
