This report highlights the significant progress in AI capabilities over the past four years, particularly noting the advent of multimodality in AI models and the growth of autonomous AI agents. Despite these advancements, organizations are failing to leverage data management technologies effectively. The study conducted by MIT Technology Review Insights, which surveyed 800 executives, indicates that only a small percentage of organizations (2%) perceive their AI performance positively. Most struggle to integrate AI successfully into their operations, often due to talent shortages and data accessibility issues.

Key findings underscore that the majority of data teams have not improved their performance in relation to AI compared to previous years. The survey results show that self-assessed ‘high achievers’ in data performance have dropped slightly since 2021. The report argues that while many organizations are deploying generative AI, only a minimal percentage report achieving business results from these technologies, highlighting a major disconnect between AI capability and its practical application in driving business outcomes.
