According to reports, the Austrian Federal Army’s move to replace Microsoft Office with LibreOffice has been in planning since 2020. As Microsoft shifted its Office products to a cloud-centric model, the need for alternative solutions became apparent. Since 2023, certain departments have been standardizing on LibreOffice, and all PCs have transitioned from Microsoft Office 2016, with exceptions for specific use cases like Access and Office 2024 LTSC.
LibreOffice has emerged as the most widely used open-source office suite, garnering increased interest from businesses and government entities aiming to maintain on-premises deployments. The demand for open-source productivity tools has been amplified by non-US organizations seeking to assert digital sovereignty. Companies like Nextcloud are also promoting open-source solutions as alternatives to Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, emphasizing new offerings that cater to these shifting needs. The Austrian Army is actively contributing to the LibreOffice project, providing funding and development support, which has led to improved features that benefit the wider LibreOffice community.
