The spyware campaigns exploit the popularity of messaging applications among UAE residents. ESET, the cybersecurity firm that uncovered the spyware, noted that users are lured into downloading these malicious apps from unofficial sources, compelling them to grant extensive permissions. Once installed, the spyware can exfiltrate sensitive data, including contacts, messages, and multimedia files, which poses significant privacy risks for individuals.
