Akamai Technologies’ latest ‘State of the Internet’ report highlights a dramatic rise in AI-based bot traffic, accounting for approximately 1% of total bot traffic on their platform. The recent ‘Digital Fraud and Abuse Report 2025’ indicates that AI bots are significantly distorting analytics and causing substantial financial losses through content scraping. The publishing industry has been hit hardest, suffering 63% of triggers from AI bots, which extract value without compensation, impacting ad revenue and data accuracy.
The analysis reveals that sectors like commerce and healthcare are significantly affected as well. AI bots have generated over 25 billion requests within a two-month observation period in the commerce sector alone. The report emphasizes the necessity for businesses to develop security capabilities aligned with the top three frameworks of OWASP to mitigate these risks. These frameworks help prioritize defenses against known vulnerabilities such as access control failures and data exposure.
Akamai’s Senior Vice President, 루페시 초크시, stresses that the rise of AI bots should be a priority not only for security teams but for all enterprises, highlighting the urgent need for management to establish robust frameworks that ensure safe AI adoption and protect digital operations.
