DevOps Platform Overhaul, Budget Overruns and Hidden Costs Warning

Source: CIO Magazine

Recent research indicates that a large number of organizations have adopted platforms to automate and streamline the software development lifecycle over the past two years. Gartner forecasts DevOps platform usage to rise from 25% two years ago to 80% by 2027. However, a report by CloudBees warns of unexpected complications related to costs when transitioning to full replacement strategies. Approximately 60% of IT leaders claimed they spent over $1 million on transitions in the last year, with those opting for full replacements averaging $1.75 million.

Additionally, companies that executed single-event platform transitions reported budget overruns exceeding 18%, translating to an average excess of $300,000 per company. Alarmingly, over a third of IT leaders indicated that 25% of their transition budget turned into sunk costs without long-term business benefits. In contrast, more than 90% of IT leaders evaluated that integrating tools instead of replacing them was more effective. Industry experts, including CloudBees’ CEO, recommend a strategy of integration over replacement to mitigate these complex financial challenges.
