Cyber Threat Data Sharing Law Expiration Risks

Senators Mike Rounds and Gary Peters discussed the potential risks of allowing the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act of 2015 to expire, emphasizing the negative impact on vulnerability sharing among companies. The law currently facilitates information exchange, particularly after U.S. Cyber Command’s overseas missions, which aim to identify and remedy weaknesses in allied computer systems.

Rounds highlighted the law’s importance in protecting companies as they collaborate on finding solutions to cybersecurity issues. If allowed to lapse, the ability for organizations to quickly discuss vulnerabilities and patch them could be significantly hindered, leading to increased risks. Peters noted that the recent temporary expiration of the law had already delayed reporting cyber attacks, underlining the urgency of finding a resolution to reauthorize it permanently. Efforts continue to navigate political challenges and secure broad support in the Senate to ensure that the protections remain intact.
