Google is still aiming for its “moonshot” 2030 energy goals

Google, facing rising energy demands, remains committed to its ambitious target of operating entirely on carbon-free energy by 2030. The company’s energy consumption has more than doubled from 2020 to 2024, making this goal increasingly difficult, as it reported only a slight decrease in carbon-free energy use in recent years.

To address its energy requirements, Google is undertaking significant projects, including an initiative for carbon capture at a new natural-gas facility in Illinois and plans to reactivate a dormant nuclear power plant in Iowa. These measures illustrate the company’s strategy to innovate within existing energy frameworks, although they have prompted discussions about the implications of extending fossil-fuel reliance and the challenges associated with retrofitting existing infrastructure. Google believes in demonstrating technology at scale to eventually bridge the gap between demand and sustainable energy utilization.
