Congressional representatives are increasingly focused on the challenge posed by China in the realm of 6G telecommunications and technology supply chains. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, who is a key member of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, has requested more details from Secretary of State Marco Rubio on efforts to build international coalitions for advancing U.S. interests in 6G. He highlighted the need to prevent a repeat of mistakes made during the rollout of 5G, which allowed Chinese companies like Huawei and ZTE to gain substantial global influence. Krishnamoorthi points out that a coalition promoting Chinese technical standards has already begun collaborating with European entities, showcasing the urgency for U.S. action to establish competitive standards and norms.

While discussing the challenges of securing U.S. networks against Chinese technology, Krishnamoorthi criticized the gaps in U.S. funding to replace existing Chinese equipment. He noted that while Congress allocated $3 billion for this initiative, the initial funding was inadequate to ensure comprehensive solutions for U.S. broadband coverage. Moreover, the Biden administration has engaged in international agreements with several countries to foster secure and resilient tech infrastructures. The increasing scrutiny from congressional Republicans regarding Chinese lobbying and the risks associated with foreign technologies highlights the escalating urgency for a cohesive U.S. technological strategy.
