Peter Williams, aged 39, has admitted to two counts of theft of trade secrets after he sold eight zero-day exploits intended for U.S. government use to a Russian hacking broker. The plea occurred in the District Court of the District of Columbia, where court documents disclosed his exploitation of access at Trenchant, a subsidiary of L3 Harris, for three years.
These stolen cyber-exploits were exchanged for millions in cryptocurrency, which Williams used to acquire luxury items. He reportedly conducted transactions through encrypted communications with a broker referred to as Operation Zero, which markets itself as a zero-day exploit platform. U.S. authorities have underscored the severity of this case and have estimated that Williams’ actions caused significant financial losses, highlighting the potential for advanced cyber capabilities to be misused against various targets.
