According to internal communications obtained by Axios and Reuters, Meta’s Chief AI Officer, Alexander Wang, explained that reducing team size will minimize the necessary discussions in the decision-making process and enable each member to have greater responsibility and impact. The Superintelligence Labs, formed last July to bolster Meta’s AI capabilities by unifying dispersed AI units, currently holds thousands of positions, with around 600 set for reduction.
While Meta has not made an official statement, it acknowledged the accuracy of Axios’s reporting through TechCrunch. The staffing cut will predominantly affect existing teams like FAIR AI, which is led by Turing Award winner Yann LeCun and represents Meta’s flagship research unit in AI. Meta intends to encourage affected employees to apply for roles in other departments, stating that these talented individuals are essential to the company’s operations in different areas.
