The Ethernet for Scale-Up Networking (ESUN) initiative focuses on developing Ethernet technology to support accelerated AI infrastructure connections and is led by the Open Compute Project (OCP). Companies including AMD, Cisco, and Microsoft are involved, aiming to establish open standards and share best practices for scaling networking solutions that meet the demands of AI workloads. ESUN specifically aims to enhance Ethernet switching and framing while excluding proprietary technologies and non-Ethernet protocols.
Additionally, ESUN will collaborate with other organizations like the Ultra Ethernet Consortium (UEC) to accelerate Ethernet advancements for AI networks. The initiative also plans to improve interoperability in high-performance AI operations between various devices and technologies. The framework is designed to seamlessly integrate individual accelerators into a cohesive AI supercomputer, thus linking network performance to AI model development and execution efficiency. Gartner anticipates that Scale-Up AI Fabrics (SAIF) technology will experience explosive growth by 2029, reinforcing the importance of Ethernet in scaling AI infrastructure.
