OpenAI launches Sora, an AI-generated video app raising questions on sustainability and legality

OpenAI recently introduced Sora, an app that provides an infinite stream of AI-generated videos lasting up to 10 seconds each, where users can create hyperrealistic ‘cameos’ of themselves and insert others’ avatars depending on permissions. Although some dismiss it as a gimmick, Sora has climbed to the top of Apple’s US App Store, signaling a possible shift in content consumption toward fantastical AI-generated material.

The app presents several challenges: it requires significant energy for video generation, raising sustainability concerns as OpenAI offers free unlimited video generation. CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the need to monetize this costly service but has not outlined specific strategies. Climate researchers may soon demand transparency on the app’s emissions footprint.

Legally, Sora uses copyrighted characters, music, and deepfakes of deceased celebrities, leading to potential lawsuits. OpenAI has notified copyright holders to opt out rather than opt in, an unusual approach, and is developing granular controls for content use. User restrictions on cameo usage are being implemented, but questions remain about misuse risks and liability for nefarious or illegal content generated through the app. Sora ultimately tests not only OpenAI’s technology but also societal willingness to engage with simulated realities.
